In Chicago, 1933. Was this the same one that still exists, or was there some changing of numbers for the US tour? I seem to recall reading that.

This has been discussed recently but I can't remember where. Of all the identity swaps this one wasn't reversed. It is under repair at present but how long it will take and how much it'll cost is not clear.

The one that exisits is the one that toured the states, correct? Has anyone ever heard a reason why they did switch engines this time and also for the Duchess?

The answer is complicated. Some understanding of the way UK railway overhaul workshops operated is necessary.

The LMS had works at Crewe, Derby, Horwich and Glasgow which carried major overhauls. Usually complete classes of locos would be allocated to one works. This works would hold all the spares for that class in store.

When a locomotive entered the works for overhaul, that works had a target time to turn out a locomotive with the same number painted on it in a fit state to run its target mileage before its next shopping.

When the loco entered the works it would be stripped down to frames and cylinders. In general whatever could not be repaired in time to meet the target time in works would be replaced from spare parts stock. Boilers, especially, took longer to repair so they were nearly always replaced at general overhauls and sometimes at intermediate repairs. However cylinders, wheels, motion and sometimes even frames could also be replaced. The parts removed would be repaired in most cases and used on another loco.

In 1934 some upgrading to the original design was taking place on the Royal Scots under the newly arrived CME, William Stanier. In particular the leading bogie truck was replaced by a new side bearer type.

When a Royal Scot was in Derby works for preparation for the trans Atlantic trip both 6100 and 6152 were present. For many years it has been stated that the locos were swopped, but there is no evidence of this.
Interestingly the record card for 6152 has gone missing!

It is possible that the loco which visited the US was mainly 6152 but....see above and you can understand why there is some confusion.

The Royal Scots were further upgraded from 1943 when their original parallel boilers and built up smokeboxes were replaced by a newly designed taper boiler with drumhead smokebox. When this work was done new cylinders were made, the inside one necessarily was produced in a casting with the smokebox saddle. To accommodate these new front ends were fitted to the frames.

The loco now preserved as 6100 was rebuilt by BR in 1950. In its present form it never carried any form of LMS paint, it always carried BR lined green.

I have seen a report that the later rebuilds got complete new frames, because by then the original frames were well worn. So the preserved 6100 may, apart from a few bits, date from 1950.
