A caption for an article on this topic in flimisies includes the following quote:

One of the engines of the “Dinkey” rail line sits at an engine house in Ames.

What engine is referred to here?

One of the engines of the “Dinkey” rail line sits at an engine house in Ames. What engine is referred to here?
From the Ames Historical Society's archival pages comes reference to Ames & College Railway #2, one of two steam donkey engines which served as said street railway's motive power. They operated 1891-1907, serving Iowa State College, when Ft. Dodge, Des Moines & Southern absorbed the line, and replaced the diminutive steam trains with electric cars.

The chronological information lists the engine[s] as having been victims of WW-II scrap drives. Apparently, one survived.

The quote refered to was placed beneath an historic photo of a dummy locomotive of this line. There is NO mention in this article that a historic locomotive from this line survives.

Ya know....I just re-read that caption and figured it out. Duh on me. As Emily Latella (Gilda Radner) would often say: "Oh, nevermind."

I was hoping that a dummy loco had somehow survived. To the best of my knowledge there is only one preserved in the US.

Actually, to pick at nits; there are six tram engines preserved in North America, of which only the Hercules at Mammoth Park in Kentucky still has it's carbody.

I have had what sounds like a seventh one described to me. It was shown to him on a hunting expedition in the backwoods of Louisiana when he was a young man; it was probably from the Garyville Northern operation. It was smack in the middle of a grove of trees; making it hard to see until you practically stepped on it. The man who knows where it was is too frail to make the trip now; if the story is true; it will probably be chanced upon again one day.

A Shay from the Garyville Northern operation is said to be in Hope Canal E. of Hwy 61, nr. Garyville, LA. It is Lima 1599/1905, a 37 ton two truck Shay. Once again, I have tried, but without a boat, you have no hope of seeing it as the land on each side is private property.

Some tracks and remains of logging cars are also back in the swamps; and the old company store is still there in Garyville.
