I'm doing a quick survey. What is the going rate for passenger car storage? I am aware that many are parked on sidings, in rail yards, depots, museum, etc. Those of you who know, please tell me what the normal rate is - assuming no water, air, electricity, bathrooms ...

Thank you.

Jim, I'm not sure if there would be much of a difference if the car was a passenger or frieght car. On privately owned track I'd imagine that a basic monthy rental fee would be appropriate. Say anywhere from $100.00 to $400.00 sounds about right. A non-profit group may get a break and be able to let the car sit for close to nothing at all.
Unfortunatly a working railroad may not be so nice to deal with.I worked on tracks that supplied a warehouse in Lawrenceville, VA. While we installed the track,Norfolk Southern was storing fifteen of their fully loaded cars in Richmond.NS charged them $500.00 per day.It took us almost two months to complete the project.Ouch!

Jim,

I'm not sure where you are located but if it is anywhere near Cincinnati there may be an answer to your question. I know that the railway museum located in Covington, Kentucky is storing some private stock in their little yard and that they could probably use some money. From talking with the nice old gentlemen down there, one who owns a caboose that is in the yard, I would think it would be very reasonable. I can give you directions to the place, you'll only get a machine if you call. Let me know if you are interested.
