Hello, Here at the Heber Valley Railroad we are currently working on painting some freight cars for our Feb. 7, 8 & 9 photo charter. Right now we are working on a former Rio Grande 70 ton 3 bay hopper. We have the car painted black and have hit a dead end. We are currently looking for the specifications on how to properly letter the car. Namely height, width and proper location of the lettering as it would have appeared on the car in the late 40's and early 50's. We need your help! We can't find these specifications anywhere. If anyone has this information or knows where it can be found please e-mail me at gregudolph@gmail.com or post here on RYPN. Hopefully in the near future I will have some pictures of what is currently going on at the Heber Valley Railroad shop. Until then, you can see one of our newly painted freight cars at: http://www.hebervalleyrr.org/volunteer/supportcrew/supportcrew.html. You will also see pictures on this page of Great Western #75 which is currently deep into a rebuild. Thank you for your help. |

Dear Greg, I recommend asking this question at the Steam era freight car discussion group on Yahoo. This group has 1112 members and with a very useful and knowledgable discussion. They may be able to provide you with the information you need or point in the right direction. What state is the car currently in? Is it possible to trace older lettering or sand off later layers of paint to reveal earlier lettering? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/STMFC/ Tom Cornillie |
