Post subject: Whereabouts of Erie Lackawanna dining car No. 737?
PostPosted: Thu Jul 26, 2001 9:12 pm

I am trying to track down the current whereabouts of ex-Erie Lackawanna steel dining car No. 737. Its final assignment was on the "Lake Cities Limited," and it served as a backup dining car to "The Phoebe Snow." The car was sold in 1967 to Robert McFadden (currently the Museum Educator at the RR Museum of PA) and was used on the New Hope & Ivyland until about 1974. Thereafter it was used by a track reconstruction firm as an office car but we have lost track of it in recent years. Any information is appreciated!

Kurt,

I think you mean the 747, not 737. At the end of the Lake Cities, the 3 ex-Erie Heavyweights were the 741, 746, and 747. The Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society is in the process of puchasing the 741 from its current owner with the intention of a full restoration. The 746 is at the Greenwood RR Heritage Museum in Greenwood, SC (not on or near an active RR). The 747 is a mystery: I too ould love to know where it went.

By the way, do you have anything on EL dining car operations: paperwork, manuals, menus, etc.?

Hi Tim,

Yes, I stand corrected about the number! We have about 50 cu. ft. of DL&W material from the Thomas T. Taber collection. I'm not sure if there's dining car material in the collection or not, but you are certainly welcome to pay us a visit to do research if you'd like! Since the Tabers collected so much of the "public" passenger side of railroading, it would not surprise me if dining car material is present. Perhaps Bob McFadden may still have the manuals and papers from when he bought the car from the DL&W? It's worth asking, anyway.

Should you track down the whereabouts of No. 747, please let me know.
