Last year I had a chance to visit Nashville and see its Union Station. The skeleton of the iron and wood train shed was still standing. Some timbers showed charring from a fire, but the structure was largely intact and quite impressive. I have since heard that the shed was to be demolished - this may have already occurred. The all-iron or iron/wood passenger train shed is becoming a rare item. Where are the survivors today? tmanz@afo.net |

The Milwaukee Road trainshed in Minneapolis was recently yuppified into an indoor skating rink, see the RyPN Editorials page, and of course St. Louis and Indianaoplis' were converted into retail shopping; the latter has failed at least once. You will enjoy the shed at the depot at Salisbury, NC, if you attend the conference there. If you wait, you can enjoy a replica of it built around 1401 at the Smithsonian. In fact, they intend to replicate a fair chunk of Salisbury. Historic Salisbury Foundation hasn't yet decided if they intend to replicate the Smithsonian Institution in the train shed in Salisbury yet, but it will probably be discussed seriously. Wouldn't it make more sense to send the real 1401 to the real Salisbury? The guys from Spencer would take good care of her........ Dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

Well they are doing it at Bethlehem, PA, so I don't see whay it would be impossible for the 1401. I can assure you that unless some dire need for it to be painted in a scheme other than its original came up, it would stay the same. I can't say it wouldn't be impossible, but 9 times out of ten, I would say it'd stay the same. We at Spencer would love the 1401 to be sent here, for it is where she belongs. Thomas- The shed at Nashville was torn down- it had partially burned and there were some abortive attempts to reuse it, but Nashville hasn't had train service in over 20 years. The platform is still there, the tracks have been covered and it is currently a parking lot. The St. Louis shed is all steel, I believe. It is currently standing, part mall, and part parking lot. Amtrak uses a small building at a rail yard about a mile away. drew@ncps-576.org |
