| Post subject: | Southern Railroad Business Car # 10 |
Can anyone provide any information on the story behind Southern Business Car # 10 ( named now Susan Marie ) at the Illinois Railway Museum. Does this organization have any future plans for this car ?? Can anyone speak as to the future of this car ? Recent pictures show the car looking quite poor, needing attention. |

Someone from IRM can best answer this, but I remember it being stored indoors during my last visit, I think it was in Barn 3. From my untrained eye, it appeared to need paint, but was in relatively intact shape. I'm sure someone from IRM could provide better information. |

I was inside the Susan Marie this summer and to my untrained eyes, the interior is in quite good shape. I believe it is stored inside due to a roof leak, probably the usual problem with air conditioner blisters. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I understand that reconstruction of the compound curves involved with such sheet metal restoration is somewhat expensive. I doubt the roof work and the exterior paint job this car needs are an IRM priority on several counts. 1—The money isn’t there. 2—The Car Department has other priorities, such as the Rock Island coaches that are the bread and butter on the coach train. 3-- The Inglehome is the best open obs car in the IRM collection, and thus should get the most attention.(although it is already in very nice condition). 4—Open platform cars are over-represented among surviving privately owned passenger equipment. So if someone were to donate a PV to IRM, the odds are it would be a platform car – maybe the Susan Marie would then be surplus (this is purely my conjecture). IRM’s four nearly-identical Rock Island coaches look very nice, especially when loaded with 400 revenue paying passengers on Thomas trains. The Coach Department also did a good (and speedy) job this Fall of de-Amtraking several Budd cars for movie use. A major rebuild of the heavyweight Pullman bedroom lounge car Dover Strait saw much work completed. And, if it hasn’t already arrived, another heavyweight sleeper will be on the property in days. I’m sure those in the know can add a lot more that was accomplished. |
