Some photos of this 30-inch gauge line, which operates newly-built 2-4-0s made in Japan:

I know I should remember this, but where were the new Tokyo Disney steam locos built? Are they copies, or original designs?

Thanks.

The Tokyo Disney engines were built by Kyosan-Kogyo in Fukushima. The inspiration for their design was Disneyland (Anaheim) #4, a rebuild of a 1925 Baldwin 0-4-0T (which in itself used design cues from the Denver & Rio Grande's #1 "Montezuma"), although there are several differences. The Tokyo engines are the only Disney engines with outside valve gear, and the steam and sand domes are "reversed" in position in contrast to typical American design. I'd be curious to know the stroke on those cylinders, too!

What is interesting about the Tokyo Disneyland resort is that it is not owned by Disney (rather Oriental Land Co.) and the railroad here does not serve as a mode of transportation as in the other parks; there is only one station and the mostly elevated tracks circle only "Frontierland" and "Adventureland".

I believe the caboose which Roger mentioned (ex-Magic Mountain in Golden, CO) is still 36" and only a display along the line.

Hi Ed,

Quite true!

Too bad it isn't on display in Ridgway, Rico, or Dolores, CO.

Roger

Thanks, Ed.
Do you happen to know if there is any information online about the construction of these locomotives?

Steve,
Nothing on the web, however, there is a chapter devoted to this (and every other Disney-related) operation in Walt Disney's Railroad Story by Michael Broggie. I believe it is still in print, although I haven't seen a copy (including my own) in years.

Kyosan's website (with a Google translation) has some general information concerning the company's capabilities as well as a photo of the final locomotive built for Tokyo Disney (a good 6+ years after the park opened)

Ed,

I found the photo using the link you provided. I'll keep an eye out for Broggie's book as well.

Thanks!!!
