Hi folks,

From reading some of the posts here, it appears that some part of the CSX complex at Clifton Forge either is available (possibly for preservation purposes) or could be made available.

Can anyone here provide an overview of what, in general, is going on at Clifton Forge? Namely-does CSX still use it as a yard facility (likely; and if so, would they really want rail preservationists tinkering with equipment adjacent to said yard); speculate on the possibility of a preservation movement taking place here, etc.

I would have thought that with the combination of Buckingham Branch taking of operations of the North Mountain Sub and this "potential" opportunity that, among other things, Jack Showalter might have moved his equipment here.

Now I'm the first to admit I don't live near here, or get by this area often, so I'll plead ignorance on the front end. Just trying to get the big picture and assess what is potentially (and/or realistically) possible.

Hi John and Everybody

Several years ago CSX donated the old C&O shops Complex to the town
of Clifton Forge.
This is an Ariel view of the shops

The buildings have gotten run down since CSX quit using it

CSX did retain Easements on parts, particularly the Water/Oil
seperator plant and the track that they still use for painting of
railcars. There is a few things stored in part of the shops but it
is mostly vacant. CSX is using the white building across the track
from the main building for storage of signaling equipment

To see more images of the Shops and their condition go to the
following link.

The BBRR has their own Facilities for doing repairs of their
Equipment and Jacks equipment is stored on the Shenandoah Valley
Line at this time.

Our organization is working on a proposal for the town but it is a
slow process and we are looking for people who are interested in
helping.

The Big Picture: CSX isn't interested in using the main shops. It
could be a good place for restoration work to be done.
Take a good look at the pictures of the shops and you can see that
even though they are rundown there is great potential there.
