One of the surving Lehigh Valley U23B's is in line to be scrapped. :(

she was retired by Wimpy Minerals, and is sitting in Anneville, PA.
she is "next in line" for the torch..

If any museum/historical society would like to preserve a Uboat, this is your chance! :)

The LV U23B Locomotives are historically significant in that they were purchased with federal funds, furnished through the United States Railway Association, in order to help keep the LV operating while planning for Conrail was taking place. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania would be an ideal place, as this locomotive was built in Pennsylvania (they don't have a GE diesel yet) and operated in PA (they don't have a LV diesel yet) and its story tells about the transition to Conrail, in which the state of Pennsylvania played a major part. It would also work well in the Reading Company Techical and Historical Soceity collection - as it would compliment the other LV equipment that they have.

In all honesty, it is probably too late to save this locomotive unless an individual is willing to purchase it outright. This should serve as another lesson that if something is to be preserved - planning and organizing has to start NOW - not after the scrap contracts have been signed and the torches have been lit. The existance of the LV U-23B's at Wimpey Materials has been known since they arrived there in the mid 1990's - plenty of time to make arrangements for the fundraising and other arrangements necessary for preservation.
