Folks I have not heard anything in a while now on the project to build from scratch a new A-1 Pacific in the United Kingdom.

Anyone have any news about the project? I would think that their PR people would have had something in a magazine in the last year or so. TM

According to the July 2001 issue of "The Railway Magazine", there's some controversy in the project following allegations by one of covenantor/volunteers the the project is suffering from:

1 "Substandard workmanship"
2 "Unwise use of the money"
3 "Factional infighting"
4 "Arrogance alien to the principles of the trust"
5 "Withholding of information from covenantors"

The directors of the A1 Trust have responded by stating that there were some design problems that were corrected and don't render the engine unsafe, that there have been disagreements among the board and that mistakes have been made but none to any degree that would endanger the project.

As a sidelight to the charges made, the Trust's solicitor has resigned.

Overall though, the Trust's chair, Mark Allatt, stated that the Trust is not in danger and there is no need to "rescue our dream."

If you can put up with the annoying sound files, learn from the horse's mouth at the group's Web site:

All of this in a steam group, Nahhhhhh, couldn't be, especially the factional fighting.

For those interested in the English Preservation scene the magazine Heritage Railway is an outstanding source for information. Though I am not a fan of overseas railroading the publication illustrates how far ahead of us the English are in the field of railroad preservation. Their American subscription agent is
