My 3 year old son keeps asking me this question and I can't find an answer for him. Hopefully, someone out there knows "Why don't trains have cabooses anymore?"

They basically didn't need the caboose anymore. The caboose carried the conductor and flagman while the engine had the engineer and head-end brakeman. They reduced the staffing to abolish the flagman and head-end brakeman jobs and then moved the conductor up to ride on the engine.

There was nobody to ride the caboose. An electronic evice, called a FRED (Flashing Rear-End Device) hangs on the rear coupler and monitors the brake air at the rear of the train.

Of course, it won't wave back to your 3 year old.
