My 3 year old son keeps asking me this question and I can't find an answer for him. Hopefully, someone out there knows "Why don't trains have cabooses anymore?" Please email to kkillion@bluecrossarena.com kkillion@bluecrossarena.com |

The caboose carried the conductor and flagman while the engine had the engineer and head-end brakeman. They reduced the staffing to abolish the flagman and head-end brakeman jobs and then moved the conductor up to ride on the engine. There was nobody to ride the caboose. An electronic evice, called a FRED (Flashing Rear-End Device) hangs on the rear coupler and monitors the brake air at the rear of the train. Of course, it won't wave back to your 3 year old.
