Does this mean that 2472's operating days are over? At the risk of being a "why'ncha" ("why-don't-you-do-this"), it would seem to me that 2472 would be a good fit at Niles Canyon, and some of the rolling stock is going there anyway. And will 2479, now at CSRM, be simply a display engine? I sympathize with the GGRM people; they have had to make some hard choices recently, and this sort of thing is coming for 95% of us. CSRM, PA State RR Museum, Steamtown NPS, possibly IRM and a very few others are the exception. |

It is my understanding the GGRM has received a generous extension from the Navy to allow 2472 to remain in the shop until June, at which point it will need to be relocated elsewhere. The museum raised the neccessary funds to complete the Form 4 and work has been proceeding both by volunteers and Bay City Boiler Works to get it back together. The Pacific Locomotive Association, caretakers of the 2467, arranged for display of 2467 at the CSRM. It was removed from the GGRM's Hunter's Point site last year, away from the corrosive salt air of the Bay, and placed on display in the museum's "roundhouse" area. It will remain displayed safely undercover for now until funds and interest justify otherwise. The PLA's primary focus has been the continued development of the Niles Canyon Railway, which has become a class act of an operation. 2479 is still at the county fairgrounds in San Jose being rebuilt by the California Trolley & Railroad Corporation. It has not run since the SP dropped the fires in '56. |
