Conway scenic is in the process of restoring ex L&N U23B #2820 for service. During the course of this restoration we find that we need a replacement time delay relay in the Dynamic Brake circuit. The relay in question is an Adams & Westlake Type 1200-60XXXX (obscured) with no serial number. Contact normaly CLOSED. Operating voltage 75 D.C. It operates for 10 seconds in RELEASE.

I have tried Larrys Truck and Electric with no results. Can anyone help?

Thanks very much.

Logan Corp., Nitro,WV is the authorized distributor for GE locomotive parts in shortline applications. I suspect they have a minimum order. I also suspect they will want a GE part number to work with. Do you have a parts book ? If not, find someone who has a U23B parts book and have them look the part number up . If you can't do that...

Be brave and contact GE Trans in Erie. The phone number used to be 1-800-GE-TRANS-or go their website.

If you are really intrepid, you can replace that old piece of junk with a solid state timer cube from (among other suppliers) ARTISAN Electronics. Contact their Applications Dept. who should be able to help you zero in on part number.

Saludos

In hindsight, I suspect that the Adlake relays are no longer available as they contain(ed) mercury.

Well, funny you should ask, as RMNE had the same problem last season on U23B 2203 (the LAST U-boat blt, BTW). As Dave says, the old Adlake relay is indeed made of that well-known railroad preservation material, "Unobtainium". After lots of searching and phone calls, our intrepid GE expert, ATK, performed some sort of work-around or substitution, and got the dynamics working properly again. ATK is known to look in on this forum, so when he does, perhaps he will communicate his findings to you.

If I recall the GE replacement part is actually an Artisan time delay that uses a fixed resistor to set it's delay time. (10K per second of desired delay). I find that its better to use the fixed resistor model than the one where you move the DIP switches to get the desired delay. Some folks always seem to make adjustments from spec with these or the adjustable air timers like the TRTD's on EMD's that usually result units not making transition, No load, or fireworks.

When we renewed the old Barco Transition Control Panel's in the E-8's with the upgraded Bach-Simpson Digital TCP we also renewed the TD's that safegard the BF contactor from picking up for two seconds after transition with the Artisan TD's that had a GE part number. (since trashed)
