Sacramento Bee editorial, found on the Sacramento Valley Rail History Yahoo group - shortage of parking at the depot there, which now sees more passengers than ever before:

Editorial: Roll on!
Try escaping out the back at the depot

Two dozen people met again last Friday to work on the parking mess at the Sacramento train depot. Mayor Heather Fargo even sent a personal emissary. Her honor's intervention is a little late but welcome nonetheless.
One of the major depot parking problems: There are two narrow exit lanes for patrons trying to exit the lot. Because of the lot's idiotic traffic flow design, these exit lanes cross the path of cars coming into the lot.

When passengers trying to leave are delayed at the automatic ticket machines because the machines malfunction or patrons don't know how to operate them (which happens almost daily), dozens of cars can get stuck. These include cars coming and going from the lot.
No signs herald the fact, but there is another way out. There's an exit at the far back side of the depot. It leads into Old Sacramento, and from there it is an easy shot either into downtown or onto the freeway.

The back exit not only gives parkers trying to leave another option, it can be used to steer arriving passengers rushing to catch trains to the nearest alternative parking facility, at Old Sacramento. That lot is across the street from the depot.

But very few people know the exit is there. In fact, for those who venture to the back of the lot, the most prominent sign says in bold letters, "DO NOT ENTER." Parkers must hunt like bloodhounds to find the back way out. Why?

Blame Old Sac business leaders and officials from the the California State Railroad Museum. While not expressly forbidding the use of the back exit, they have strongly discouraged it. Though they concede they've not seen any conflicts with the few patrons who have used the back exit, they worry that traffic problems might arise. Sorry, but that's not a good reason to keep hundreds of people bottled up in a parking lot with too few exits.

In a voice mail message to The Bee, the mayor made it clear the city is committed to fixing the depot parking problem soon, beginning with providing signs that steer people to all available exits. "The city has a sign shop," she said. "And, we know how to make signs. We even know how to install them."

That's good to know. With the mayor's active intervention, frustrated depot patrons may soon find a way out of the parking maze.

But signs alone won't be enough. The train depot is a bustling place. It's going to get busier. After she gets the signs up, the mayor might want to turn her attention to expanding depot parking.

I think it would help if the eastern terminus of the basic Amtrak Capitol Corridor could be extended to the former Mclellan Air Force Base (Watt Avenue) and Roseville (Rocklin). This way Amtrak passengers from the major Sacramento suburbs would not need to crowd into downtown Sacto in order to board this very busy Amtrak corridor. The current problem is that only ONE Capitol train goes east of downtown Sacramento when all of them should go at least as far as the Roseville (Rocklin) area. I realize that getting additional track capacity may be a problem around the major UP (SP) Roseville yards. I hope that it should be doable to get service to Mcclellan in the short term. Mcclellan would be a good first step because it has easy freeway and access to several major surface streets.

Yes, a successful passenger train service can create problems if future capacity needs are not intelligently planned for!
Thank you for posting this interesting article Bob!
