Yes that is the Sam Hill a.k.a. Satilla. If you find any aerial photos from that period, that whole train had its own shed for storage. Now only the locomotive and one coach are inside in the museum.

This is a Rogers locomotive, a sister of the W&A GENERAL. If you look closely in the photo Chris posted, you will see the railroad name ATLANTIC & GULF, for which this engine was built. This was, I believe, the third railroad line to reach Albany, GA, not long after the South Western Railroad arrived from Americus to the north in 1857, and the Brunswick & Albany arrived from Waycross. The A&G was built northward from Thomasville, at a junction with the Savannah, Florida & Western Ry, later to become part of the Atlantic Coast Line. The line connected to the Brunswick & Albany, later Brunswick & Western, on the east side of the Flint River, and gained access to Albany via the B&A bridge over the Flint. The B&W also became part of the ACL. When CSX left Albany, the old name was revived by the Gulf & Ohio Railways which leased the line from CSX. It was operated under the reporting marks AGLF. Now it is operated as part of Georgia & Florida Railway, formerly G&F RailNet, now owned by Omnitrax. |
