| Post subject: | Michigan roundhouse list |
Can someone update which of these roundhouses in Michigan are still standing? I know a few have been razed since the list was completed, and the status of some others is unclear. Michigan seems to have more extant roundhouses than just about any other state, and this is a great list to have available. http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/R ... seMenu.htm |

Only three I can vouche for: 1) Deaborn, Greenfield Village- not going anywhere anytime soon! 2) Tawas City (D&M)- swung by there last Memorial Day and it's a shell of the complex it used to be! The photos at the link show how it remains today with only a few stalls left and a Mega Lo Mart... er, Super Wal Mart surrounding it to the south and west. The tracks were rerouted away from the roundhouse to make room for Wally World, and still allow the Lake State to run north to Alpena. I'm glad I have memories of what it was like before the Mega Lo Mart came to town! 3) Port Huron (PH&D)- still standing but needs work. Not sure who owns it but between the elements and vandals, it needs some major work. Without the proper care, between the roundhouse and the old PH&D offices right across the parking lot from it, both will fall victim to the wrecking ball in the future. My worries lay with CSX and their shedding of trackage in Michigan. If they decide to sell the highly profitable PH&D Industrial Track, who knows if those buildings will survive. I haven't done much tooling around the state like I used to, but I can vouche for these three at the very least. Take care and keep warm! |
