The trucks came from a trade in locomotive. Other roads did this as well. T.S.B.Y. Still has the old Ann Arbor units that are very simular. Some times they didn't scrap everything you traded in. I've heard a few reasons,
You saved money or demand exceded supply of new trucks. I've also heard some of the smaller roads did this due to spare parts and they were used to this stlye of truck.

As Jack said, GM&O traded in ALCo FAs to EMD when it purchased its GP30s and GP35s. EMD was trying to deliver the final blow to ALCO, and offering a liberal trade-in allowance not only deprived its failing competitor of a loco sale, but also the more profitable spare parts sales.

There were several railroads who took advantage of the offer, and a few specified reuse of ALCos trucks for the reasons Jack cites.

These locomotives were never repainted after the ICG merger - I have photos of black GP30s and GP35s, and red GP38s well into the 1980s. However, the initials on the nose are not correct. The GP38s had a "wing" herald on the nose, but I never saw any nose jewelry like on the loco in the picture.

Hi Everyone,

I believe the loco in question is owned by the GM&O Historical Society. It was bought from the P&L RR and restored by them. When PAL started operation they received a number of x GM&O units still in GM&O colors.

It is a GP35 riding on trucks donated by a GM&O FA. Ann Arbor, Milwaukee Road and Soo Line got GP30 and/or 35s will "organ donor" trucks from mostly FAs although the Milwaukee Road's trucks came off of RS3s.

Below is a link for photos of it after it was restored. It is owned by the GM&OHS.
