Post subject: | PRR car numbering info |
I recently posted about a PRR X31a round roof boxcar # 497310 that I saved. Well, I have found out that the current car number was not the original build #. The 497310 was assigned to the car when it went into “S” service for the Pennsy during the late 50’s early 60’s. I would like to find out what the original number was because I would like to paint the car in the original circle keystone scheme. So if any one out there would know what that number was please let me know, thanks. BTW, I just recently saved a PRR F30D 50’ all one-piece cast steel flat car. So what does one would do with a flat car? I plan on using it for a stage, display or photo freight piece. Since that flat car is relatively low to the ground 3’ 6” it can make a great platform to bring Santa into town or what ever else I could cook up. I have up loaded pictures and a short loading video to my site for you viewing pleasure. http://www.prrllc.com/projects_F30d.html Thanks again for any info on the car numbers, Scott |

Scott: I assume you have looked for the original car number for the X31a in the normal places. On one of the inside walls, perhaps up near the roof. Or somewhere on the underframe. As for the F30d, I am glad you have the original Pennsylvania number (475532). We have a F30d at our museum and would like to renumber it to its original number. But the car was one of 86 that PRR transferred to Trailer Train. Unfortunately, the cars did not carry the same numbers on Trailer Train as they did on the Pennsy. And I have never been able to find the original Pennsy number anywhere on our car. Les Beckman (Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum/North Judson, Indiana) |

Dear Les, Does this car retain any of its Trailer-Train modifications? Tom Cornillie |
