> Anybody have any pics or accounts of this? > (especially the RS-3's)? Hi Mike, I got back from Maine in time to get up at 4:30am to head up to Scranton for Saturday's festivities. Arriving at Steamtown around 8:30 AM, we were treated to a static display of the D-L's C-420, a couple of C-424's, the AHRS Reading RS-3 and thier little RDG Century. Oh yeah, the Big Boy was next door... and I am not sure everyone knew she was the biggest Alco there! The charmer of the Scranton display was not an Alco! D-L's just rehabbed EMC Lackawanna switcher was idling away with a train of 2 DL&W hoppers, a Rutland flat, a D&H boxcar, a PRR boxcar and restored DL&W "Keyser Valley" caboose! Wow! What a train!!!! Despite rainy weather, many great photos were had. The D-L ran a passenger train and frieght train from Scranton to Analomink and return (actually, the frieght consist went only to Pocono Summit). On the way out the two D&H RS-3's hauled the freight while the D-L M-636 and the Reading Tech's Reading C-630 halued the 4 car passenger train. On the way back, they swapped trains. There were tons of photo stops and ground-shaking smoky run-bys! The last photo stop, along Ridge Row in Scranton, was topped off by the RS-3's being revved up in place to produce mind-boggling amounts of Alco smoke. For the record, the C-425 belongs to Reading Tech. The ARHS just has the RS-3 #467. They, along with the C-630, traveled up to Scranton a few weeks ago for this event. It is likely that the #467 will remain there at the D-L for mechanical work which should restore it back to operating condition. hoffmannwj@nswccd.navy.mil |

Putting that weekend was a lot of work for both us and our employees but it was very rewarding. Oh and by the way, the 2 6-axles pushing the train out of Scranton was NOT staged. It was purchased by the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society from the Green Bay & Western, and is still wearing their red paint, with the G-B-W changed to R-D-G. This unit was received operational, and has been used for several seasons (along with C-630 #5308)on various R.C.T.& H.S. excursions. However, the 5204 has developed some internal problems which are best left to be diagnosed by the ALCO DOCTORS at the D-L. When she is healthy again, (and when we have a roof to put her under) she will be re-painted to the as-delivered READING green & yellow. 5308 will be returning to Leesport after the activities are over at Scranton. 5204 will remain at Scranton for therapy, and possible surgery. When that's done, we (R.C.T.& H.S.) have an RS-3 too !! TIP-OF-THE-HAT to everyone at the DELAWARE-LACKAWANNA RAILROAD for a job well done, with the ALCO-DAYS. What a great ride up there beyond Moscow !! Nice track! It's been a while since 5308 got to stretch her legs like that. And thanks for using your brush-cutter. (for a laugh, please note my message about running a Big Boy, somewhere in a thread, above.) Still hoping to see READING 5308 posed next to UNION PACIFIC 4012, before 5308 leaves for home.
