Since returning from Baltimore I’ve been doing a little research on the early B&O locomotives there. Most of my resources say that when B&O’s Major J. G. Pangborn was assembling equipment for display at the 1893 Columbian Exposition, he found four Grasshopper-type engines still at work at the Mt. Clare Shops in Baltimore. These engines - all similar in appearance - were subsequently rebuilt by the B&O for exhibit. If I have the facts correct, B&O 2-2-0 No. 8, the “John Hancock” (Mt. Clare Shops, April 1836) was rebuilt to represent B&O No. 3, the earlier “Thomas Jefferson.” B&O 2-2-0 No. 2, the “Andrew Jackson” (built at Mt. Clare Feb. 1836) was rebuilt to represent the earlier “Atlantic” of 1832. (Both of these locomotives are now at the B&O Railroad Museum). Another Grasshopper , the 1835 0-4-0 “John Quincy Adams” was rebuilt to represent B&O No. 1, the “Traveler.” (Now on display in Dayton, Ohio). What happened to the fourth locomotive? I have information that it was rebuilt to represent the 1838 “Mazeppa,” but was not operational because tin cylinders and other questionable parts were used during its backdating. Both the “Thomas Jefferson” and the “Atlantic” show up in photos from the 1927 Fair of the Iron Horse, but not the others (Presumably because they weren’t operable). Anyone know where the "Mazeppa" is today, or what became of it?

The Traveler, at Carillon Park in Dayton (displayed inside), certainly looks as though it was retired operable.
