No rail-specific reporrts have come out of the area yet, but bear in mind there are problems with lack of power in the hardest-hit area which will slow infomation flows.

General news so far suggests that although it was Category 5 it moved over the inhabited areas fairly quickly which minimised damage. Lots of powerlines down (& therefore water/sewer infrastructure not working), roofs ripped off buildings, crops destroyed, etc but no deaths reported so far.

Still no heritage rail news but for commercial rail Supply Chain Review reports.....

Rail services in North Queensland have ceased as a result of damage caused by Cyclone Larry.

Queensland Rail[ QR] issued a release last night saying their rail network has been heavily impacted. There has been no rail traffic on the line — freight and passenger — since yesterday afternoon between Townsville and Cairns. It's not known when services will recommence.

Freight depots at both Tully and Innisfail have received extensive damage and are currently inoperable. A review of damaged freight stock and infrastructure will be conducted as soon as possible.

QR's North Queensland communications systems have received significant damage leading to difficulties assessing the network damage. There are reports of trees across tracks and powerlines.

QR are preparing for the possible impact of floodwaters, which were expected to cut the North Coast line in places from last night.

QR have despatched crews for assessment and repair work in some locations, but believe it will be some time before an accurate assessment of the total damage is complete.

QR has offered to assist the State Government agencies with transport needs to Townsville if required, saying local repair crews are on standby to restart rail services for the people of North Queensland as quickly as possible.
