I ask this question every so often and I've yet to get a clear answer. I'll try again...
What type of signage did railroads use to indicate to the engine crew when to lower a tender scoop and when to raise it for taking on water from a track pan? Was it a simple letter L or R on signs, with maybe a track speed shown?
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania had a nice exhibit on water scoops and track pans some 5 years ago or so, but it never answered my question. They also published a nice write-up on their history.

Can not speak for the PRR however the NYC used lights on the engineers side of the ROW
"lunar white" at the entrance and "purple or blue at the exit.
