Who would have ever thought that railfans would be excited about a SD-40-2? Now if a train rolls through town with a couple of SD-40s with no widecabs everyone is excited. Maybe one day one will be placed in a city park somewhere. Then 20 years later pulled out to be restored for fantrips.

Naaah. Not until all those smoky, noisy, exciting diesels are replaced by quiet, clean, efficient, soul-less nuclear/fuel cell locomotives or something similar. <:-)

The neat thing about this is that the builder is involved, too. Maybe EMD and UP will team up. But do you mark the last unrebuilt SD40-2, or the last Franken-40, as there are going to be scores of those running around for years?

Going back to Alexander's posting, I really liked the design ALCO had for a PA1 look-alike powered by a nuclear reactor. Imagine the results of that thing being involved in a grade crossing accident in the middle of Chicago, or a wreck like the Amtrak/MBTA pileup at Back Bay Station in downtown Boston.
