I believe that the former V&T 4-4-0 "Reno" has an all welded boiler. It no longer is operable, but might have run under Federal rules while leased to the UP in 1969. I am told that the "Eureka" was reboilered at some time. Was this a welded replacement? "Eureka" is operated with some regularity on the D&SNGRR. The new boiler built for the Heisler at Cass is all welded, I don't know if it has been placed in service yet. J.David jdconrad@snet.net |

The last I knew, the EUREKA still has the boiler it had in the later 1930s when Warner Bros bought it. Dan Marcroft has spoken of it being the original steel boiler. Dan told a story of co-opting a neighbor into helping him rivet on a doubler plate on the boiler-kept the neighbor from complaining about the noise. Due to fire damage when it was at "Old Vegas," Dan replaced the cab, tender frame, etc. I recall, that the headlight is a reproduction. But all of the brass work survived; Dan did replace the brass on the cylinders because it was just too dented. Brian Norden bnorden@gateway.net |

Post subject: | About the Reno.. |
I've asked this before, but never gotten a complete answer. V&T No. 11, the Reno at Old Tucson in AZ was scheduled to be converted to compressed air operation sometime in the 1980s, with a diesel compressor installed in the firebox and large air tanks added in the tender shell. Some have told me this work was begun, others have said it never was. Who knows, and if so, how much damage was done before the project was halted?
