This seems like a perfect firm to carry out an archaeological investigation of the North Pemberton site before the Wawa construction proceeds. This project shows that they have experience in the region and with railroad sites.

We already know what is there. The excavating for old foundations was done years ago when the property went up for sale. Ripping up the old foundations, freight house, general store, bike shop, hay press building, turntable pit, oil shack, etc will be a piece of cake. But what are they going to do with the mile and a half of old ties that are buried in the ground? See when the PRR scrapped the yard, they pulled up the rails and knocked down the buildings, then dumped tons of dirt and graded over everything else, ties, plates, spikes, foundations, etc. And although there are those that still hold out hope that we can wrestle the site away from those greedy people, I have resigned myself to the fact that they are not interested in saving money or serving the community like it says on their web site. We have the proof and have offered to show it to them that they will save money by staying where they are.

I've walked the Lakehurst site many times. I live just down the road. There is no way of knowing what was there unless you knew before hand. After the dig was done it was just reburied. Its such a shame. Lakehurst used to see tons of trains every day. Now its lucky if it sees two a week and they only lay over there. No freight ever stays there. I hope that NJT's MOM project gets some more momentum. Lakehurst would be the terminus of the MOM project.
