I need to make a new tool to work the ceiling panel locks on some Budd dome cars.

Its the square drive locks that look like a socket driver should fit into them.

Can anyone tell me what size square drive works these things? What is the dimension of the square hole in the lock as well as the round opening in the panel itself? My original tool vanished and I need to replace it ASAP.

Thanks.

Eugene,

I have found on our SPV-2000 at the museum, that all is needed is a heavy (single hand, not 2 hand sized grip) straight slot screw driver, inserted diagonally in the hole. The one I use has a square shaft, that I put a small crescent wrench on (adjustable parallel jaw wrench, a open end wrench also works well). With this technique I have opened all of the panels when needed, and have yet to mar the lock or the damage screwdriver. I even opened one that the lock howled as it turned, due to lack of lubrication.

Good luck,

We make our own out of 5/16" keystock, you can heat one end up with a torch and bend it to form a T- handle, they last forever or untill someone needs a piece of 5/16 keystock.
