Website for this H. H. Richardson-designed station at Palmer, Massachusetts, which is now the Steaming Tender Restaurant. Derelict for many years, the building took over 20 years to restore. In railroad use, it served trains of the Central Vermont Railway and the Boston & Albany line of the New York Central.

I imagine that with a steaming tender, the injectors would be a pain to operate.

The Steaming Tender Restaurant is a superb attraction at what is already an outstanding trainwatching location. The food at the restaurant is excellent and the prices are quite reasonable. A number of organizations are planning convention activities this year that involve the restaurant.

Palmer Massachusetts also has a new library with a nice meeting room and a railroad theme. They have had a number of railroad related presentations by speakers in the last year, and these events are open to the public.

The restaurant may be great, food and all, but the locomotive on display, as well as the name of the place, leaves a lot to be desired!

The locomotive has an outrageous smokestack, headlight and "cow-catcher", all applied by someone with no knowledge of real locomotives.

As for the name.... same story!

Too bad... it could have been "accurate" as well as "great".

Well, I guess the line either didn't have any tunnels or they looked like upside down keyholes from the skeleton key days. Yikes!

Wonder if they have any idea how silly that looks. They were probably more worried about "cute" than authentic.

I would suggest that the folks who are concerned about the authenticity of the steam locomotive on display there might consider approaching the restaurant owner and offer assistance in restoring it to a more correct appearance. I work on diesels and the ones running by there look just fine to me, and the name of the restaurant doesn't seem like a matter of great concern either. Compared to the deteriorated structure with an antique shop that it used to be, they have made a tremendous improvement.
