I noticed this recent addition to Doug Bailey's site, showing an Australian locomotive under what looks like a carport one might find in Florida. With a lightweight, translucent roof, it doesn't require heavy support pillars to block viewing, and the roof lets in some light for viewing and photos. It is also mounted high enough to see the whole engine. There is no fencing, but a perimeter fence could be built further out, restricting access. The whole thing does not look terribly expensive and in a bad windstorm might just blow away without damaging the locomotive too badly. The shelter is not a masterpiece of architectural beauty, but would fit in with typical park playground equipment of today. http://www.steamlocomotive.info/vlocomo ... splay=5616 |

Bob I liked your reference to a “carport for engines”, interesting enough about a year ago I started looking into light but stable shelter or protection for historic railroad equipment either being restored / rebuilt or even for museum’s to economically provide short or long term weather protection to equipment. While working with the Navy in Florida I’ve seen examples of the two following company’s shelters before and after this past seasons hurricanes and they all came through just fine. Both of these company’s are just examples of what’s out there who offer a wide variety of sizes and stiles to cover what ever you have that you would like to keep the weather off of. Once I get settled and look to put my private cars under cover these may be an option if a true railroad structure is not available in my area.
