| Post subject: | RyPN Home Page Down |
For those of you who have the wherewithal to navigate here without the home page being up I wish to apologize for the RyPN home page being down. The service at Web.com (formerly Interland) has gotten worse and worse. I have sent repeated tickets in asking for them to do soemthing and now the site doesn't work at all. Given their track record on previous issues I am not optimistic for a quick resolution. Plus, even if they get it fixed we may go ahead and migrate to another company in the very near future. In which case, given my current workload at my real job, and lack of spare time at this point in time, we may be down for several days before it's all fixed again. But, we will be back, sooner or later.... |

Glad to know it isn't just my computer. I snuck in through the PM page, by clicking the link in the notification message i got from HK. A useful backdoor. dave |

I thought it might be my computer as well, but then did a Google search and got to the registration page and jumped here. Hope it can be resolved quickly, Hume. Thanks so very much for all you (and the other volunteer staff) do to keep this site running. |

Maybe they're working on the problem. I also Googled the name, and the first hit took me to a page with the simple text "test". The next hit gave me a 404 error, and further down was a citation for an Interchange listing that took me right here. I'd also like to say thanks to all who put in the time to maintain the site. |

It might be helpful to bookmark the address below for the time being, and post it around some other forums until the issue is resolved. http://rypn.sunserver.com/forum |

Like all the rest, I too received the same results, the "test" page, and then the 404 Error page. Hume has installed a "New Home Page" for lack of better definition, explanation, pretty much reads as in his original post of this thread. As mentioned, I'd recommend bookmarking the forum page (at least for now). Also, if everyone can do their part to help by passing the word along... Would hate to lose anyone due to a service problem that isn't really of our making. |

The problem was, Stephen Syfrett didn't aim his magic narrowly enough in the "real names" thread, and it spread to take out the whole list. Jason was able to sneak in during the confusion. We must be more careful. dave |

Lord, I have no clue how I wandered on after several tries. I, like the others who were able to log in, wish everyone the best in rectifying the situation. I miss you all. |

Dang it! I guess I'll need to be more careful next time. Sorry, Hume! |

| Post subject: | Migration Under Way |
We have started the migration from Web.com (Interland) to Sunserver. Hopefully this time next week Interland will just be a bad memory. The DNS pointers have been changed from Interland to Sunserver. Uploading the files to the new server is in progress and should be complete by tomorrow morning. The new server is a virgin windows box and Doug Bailey is still setting it up. Hence, when you try and go to www.rypn.org you get asked for a user id and password. Hopefully that will be fixed tomorrow. My schedule for the weekend and beyond: >Tomorrow (Saturday) go skiing during the day. >If I don't hurt myself, Saturday night work on the migration some more. >Sunday have to work at my real job, because I went skiing Saturday. >Sunday evening have a family get together which hopefully won't last long so I can work on the migration some more. >Only be able to spend 1-2 hours a night on this during the upcoming week, so I anticipate everything will gradually get back to normal thru the week, and hopefully have it all finished by next weekend. One final word, be sure and bad mouth Web.com (Interland) to everyone you can and say good things about Sunshine (Sunserver). |

Thanks for the update and keep up the good work -- Out our way, (Michigan) Easter is traditionally the last weekend the ski slopes up north are open, but this year they've been closed for a few weeks. Bob H |

Awwww....Hume....as far as I am concerned, fixing this wonderful forum can wait until after Easter. You deserve to have some time for yourself and your family! THANK you VERY much for your work so far! My son bookmarked the Interchange for me some time ago, so I did not know there was any problem at all with the RYPN home page. All I do is click on the proper line on that bookmark list. :) I thank ALL of the folks who have worked so hard - and continue to work very hard - to keep this most wonderful site up and running in perfect shape! :) Margaret (SP fan) |

Many years ago, when I was much more active in designing and hosting web sites, I made the HUGE mistake of going with Interland. During the selling phase of the deal, I was treated like the most important person Interland ever did business with. However, when things started to go sour, things were different. They didn't know who I was, didn't want to know who I was and couldn't fix the problems. At the peak of this mess, I had about 50 sites with them and something was not functioning with one or two of them literally all the time. It would typically take a at least a WEEK to fix an issue and I always had trouble tickets in the queue with them. Some problems never did get fixed before I bought my own server and told them to go to.... Doug Bailey's Sunserver company is a whole different story. He is an honorable guy who has put his money where his mouth is MANY times in support of rail oriented web sites and organizations. He also happens to know what he's doing with his rock-solid web servers. All of us (including yourself, Hume!) will be very glad you made the switch. |

Thanks for the kind words, Rich. You made my day. And as you can see, most of rypn.org is back up. All the kudos for this effort should go to Hume. We provided (and stabilized) the hosting environment and he put in the effort to get the rypn.org code working in its new home. Since this is a brand new server, we'll be keeping close tabs on it, and have put it on our external monitoring system so we'll know how good a job it does of serving the site. It's our pleasure to help, Hume. Looking forward to helping in the future. Regards, Doug Bailey |
