Note and some photos here on the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum of the recent acquisition of one of the Harpur-built narrow gauge 4-4-0s from Houston's Astroworld by the new Pacific Coast RR in California.

These 4-4-0s were attractive little amusement park engines, built in the 1960s, I believe using most of the patterns from the first two Disneyland locomotives.

While stories fly around about the Harpurs being built to 5/8 scale, they are quite significantly larger than the 6 or so Disney engines built as such. While I haven't seen the Georgia engines, the Astroworld locomotives at least are closer in size to a small narrow-gauge 4-4-0. To quote the CMO, "It's an entirely different beast". The railroad's ex-Disneyland Railroad "Retlaw" coaches, built to near exact 5/8 scale for the park's opening 50 years ago, are still noticeably dwarfed by it.

The spot plate (lettered "City of Houston, Texas") and Six Flags panels from the cab will be donated to a museum in Houston. The locomotive will be receiving both significant mechanical and cosmetic work over the coming months which will see this unique machine's potential better realized.
