Hey all

Here is a tale of woe for all those who have an interest in the often joint histories of the US Military and the railroads. Two former US Army railcars (a hospital car and a communications car) left Steamtown today for a short ride to the Pittston Yard of the R&N where they will be scrapped. For a little more check out...

Hi Dave,

Sad news. It's funny, but about 11 years ago (OK, maybe a little more), one of the NPS rangers and I (as a volunteer) tried to get the park to acquire two troop cars that were in Pittston for scrapping. The dream was to get the collection the beginnings of some WWII equipment.

It is a crime that these are headed to the heap, thought it sounds liek Steamtown is just a sad witness to the event and not the culprit.

Too bad. For all the tremendous preservation the Scranton area has seen (Steamtown and D-L guys in railroading, and all the mining displays), the Lackawanna Valley has been the site of some of the most egregious demolitions and historical destruction that the US has recently seen.

While the whole valley has suffered this plight, Scranton in particular has been the scene of devastatingly short-sighted preservation policies.

OK, soap box retired.
