What a great shot! I hope the 2-10-2's get somewhat Americanized before they are taken out to stretch their legs. Proper headlights, maybe an oscillating headlight, like CB&Q's, paint the drivers black, fix up the skyline. These will look sweet, assuming they get the chance to do some real work at real speeds! |

It sure will interesting to see what becomes of the US bound QJs. The Chinese are still working steam hard. We saw JS class 2-8-2s pulling monster 50 car trains just last week. The QJs are harder and harder to find. |

It is my understanding that the QJ's will be 100% stock China National paint, with "rail in the moon-gate" logos and all. Probably just like Boone and Scenic Valley. Of course, Henry has made no bones about this being a commercial venture to resell, so if you would like one with proper headlights, black drivers, and a removed skyline (which by the way houses the throttle), I believe it will only cost you and/or a group of your friends $450,000 US (FOB Iowa). If you are using a film camera, what you do is adjust the F stop down and set the shutter speed to something like 1/30th or 1/50th of a second. As the locomotive comes by, you track it in the viewfinder and gently squeeze off the shot. The faster the loco, usually the better the shot. The large locomotive is relatively stable in the image, since you are panning with it's forward motion. The fixed background is a blur, since you are moving along with the train. The drivers on steam locos are particularly cool, since they are rotating out of the horizontal plane of movement. Don't forget, this does take practice, and you should dedicate at least a roll of film to perfecting your skill with panning. |

Dennis is far more adaptable than he wants us to believe, especially when it is profitable for him to adapt. Anybody who can translate to the public sector from the business world and not burn out must be. dave |
