EMD switcher leased to the Bevier & Southern in Missouri, here in 1962. When I visited in 1994, the RR was torn up, but this rickety enginehouse still was barely standing, with some rotting drovers caboose bodies nearby used as outbuildings. A local postman told me the BN intended to reuse the B&S grade to get back to the coal mines. Anyone been there lately? Is the enginehouse gone? Did BNSF tay track on the old B&S grade?

Bob:

Sorry, I can't help you with an answer to the relaying of track on the old Bevier & Southern by BN or BNSF, but when I stopped by Bevier a few years ago, I went by and took a look at B&S 2-6-0 # 112 on display. It was a dreary, rainy day, and the 112 was even more dreary. Asbestos falling out of her jacket, she was a sad, sad sight. Wonder if anyone has been by to see her lately? Or has any recent photos?

Yes, portions of the old B&S grade was used by the BN to serve a new coal burning power plant. The old grade was greatly improved and the new "spur" had new ties and heavy welded rail. The power plant is served by a large turning loop typically used to unload unit trains. Most of the coal comes from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming although some may come from local strip mines. The line was built in 1994 and opened for service by early 1995. The new track connects with BN/CB&Q/H&StJ W. Quincy-Brookfield line west of Bevier.
