Hi,

Will be in Amsterdam this fall. Any steam suggestions? All I hear about is funny cigar smoke there, and train smoke, too?

Advice appreciated!

Don't forget eels eaten from a puchcart while walking down the red light district on a pleasant evening.......

BTW, they do taste like chicken.

I have a long essay on the Dutch steam scene available in the Travel section of Steam Central at www.steamcentral.com

Have a look and then drop me a line if I can help with questions, etc.

What they have over there is mostly itty bitty tank engines, but they're charmers. You're in for some treats.

Hop a train to Utrecht and visit the nice railway museum there!

Pickpockets are rampant in Amsterdam. I had planned to go to Utrecht when I was there in 97. Unfortunately, when they got my wallet, they also got my passport. I spent the five hours I had planned to spend going to and from Utrecht in the American Consulate General getting a new passport.

Rob;

I'm going back for a work-trip this fall, too.

I lived in The Hague for a couple of years. As Eric mentioned in another answer, he did a good writeup a little while ago.

The Museum in Utrecht is good; it is probably 1/2 hour walk from the main station. (if you don't get lost)

The museum at the narrow gauge line in Leiden will probably be open sat or sunday, but best to check first. (email me, and I'll try to find out)

The best one, by far, is to go to the SSN depot, about 1km north of Rotterdam Nord station on a Saturday morning. They have (if my memory is correct) 8 locomotives in various stages of repair. You'll have to pay maybe 5nlg to get in. Well worth it, IMHO.

I am very sorry for what happened to you. However, it is a good idea to carry your passport, as well as most of your wallet, in a good money belt. Almost any travel store will have them, spend the extra bucks for a good one. I take two credit cards with me, one for my pocket that has a very low credit limit. On my last trip to Europe one guide complained that many tourists travel as if they have never been to a large city. Sorry to ramble on...

You are right. The only reason my passport was in my wallet was because the previous year we had been in Scotland, and every time I had to cash a traveler's check, they required my passport. I shall never do it again. I refer to my passport issued in Amsterdam as my "Dutch Passport."
