Pictured on the OC website is an RS-3 numbered 1077 that used to be Lake States 1077, D&M 1077 and was purchased new by the LIRR. Perhaps Dick Glueck can help with the LIRR number. Dave |

I can try to find out. There are four extant ex-LIRR RS3's to my knowledge. 1556 is at the RRMLI, 1555 is for sale in Florida, another is decked out as an Ill.Central unit in the midwest, and another is disguised for a shortline. This latest unit is a nice revelation, considering we all thought it to be scrapped. Note also, a single ex-LIRR RS1, #467, remains today, for sale in Indiana. This would be a sweet unit to save as it served in endless commuter runs from long before the end of steam, it is (of course) an early ALCO, and it is a lone survivor. Hopefully, the company owning her will reconsider the unit as more than mere scrap metal and will donate it or make the purchase price feasible to one of the LIRR preservation groups. Addendum: The D&M RS3 is ex-LIRR 1553. THis has gone on to become an Ohio Central unit. |
