C&O NW2 5075

Does anyone know if the former C&O NW2 owned by Koppers Tie in Green Spring, WV is still there? It's former CSX 9575 (C&O 5075). Last I heard, the unit was up for donation to anyone that could take it away. I've tried contacting the company a few times, with no response.

I believe this locomotive is now stored at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

I'm 99% sure the beat up switcher painted blue and gray I saw a couple of months ago was the Koppers engine. I was visiting with Dan Pluta at the shop and he probably told me the whole story, which, apparently, I have filed in the "do not recall" section of my brain. Perhaps someone else can confirm.

The pictures I've seen have been of the unit in full CSX blue and gray glory. I did come across a picture of the unit in Chessie System paint.

The N&W unit at Cumberland is indeed owned by Roanoke Chapter, NRHS, but it is an Alco, T-6 #41, later CW #11. It is at Cumberland for some running gear work after coming off lease at the West Va Central (now complete) and is awaiting the wheels of CSX beauracracy to allow movement.

The unit moved to WMSR using Ohio Central reporting marks and the number was changed (the 7 became a 2). It had also been converted to roller bearing trucks.

Was the unit converted to roller bearing trucks while after Koopers Tie or after it was acquired by WSMR? If the latter, were the unit's trucks rebuilt or swapped?

Folks:

I admit that I am getting slow in my old age but I am a bit confused by the info on this thread. The way I've got it is that C&O EMD NW2 #5075 (once owned by Koppers) AND N&W Alco T6 #41 (presently owned by the Roanoke Chapter of NRHS) are BOTH at Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland. Did I get that right? If so, my question as to whether Koppers donated the NW2 to WMSR (or if the locomotive is just stored there) remains unanswered.

It was obviously done prior to leaving the Koppers plant because CSX would not move it on friction trucks, which is why nobody was able to get it out of there.

A couple things that most people do not know about that plant location;
There are only two ways out of there. Once you get off the Koppers property to the only road, if you turn left you have to cross a wood beam toll bridge, which I can assure you would not hold the weight of a lowboy toting a 110-115 ton locomotive, and most likely is not wide enough. If you turn right, there is an underpass which carries the CSX main line (Cumberland Subdivision) over a one lane width passage with an arched ceiling. I don't think there is sufficient clearance to drive a lowboy with an NW2 on it through there.

Now you know why Koppers offered it to "anybody who could get it off the property". As for the second part of your question, I don't know for sure, but I would think they did a truck swap. There are no facilities out there. You would have to do the work outside.

If you had read the previous posts closely, you would have seen that the reporting marks on the NW2 are Ohio Central. I know that's a lot of information to digest but it is possible to dig it out with time.

As for the N&W T6, that locomotive has been in Cumberland for at least two years. It came to Cumberland, along with some passenger cars, when it left the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley.

The ownership still seems a bit unclear. Nothing in the above states that this unit is owned by Ohio Central or Western Maryland Scenic. I have known many shortlines that have allowed private owners/museums to move equipment using their reporting marks.

A group of us from New Jersey were down there in February. Our third trip. The switcher was not in the plant at that time. I do have some shots of it from a few years ago. Believe I had to shoot through a fence, as this property ( Koppers) is definitely private.

You are correct about the location. That is a neat (privately owned and "maintained") toll bridge. The old lady in the booth hands out a basket on a pole. The supports for the planks that vehicles travel on are old rails. Get a kick each time we go over it.
