This is big news. Let's hope that things keep looking up.

This always confuses me. You mean "Strasburg, Colorado" of course.

My apologies.
Yes, we're talking about C&S #9, leaving Strasburg, Colorado for Silver Plume and tha Georgetown Loop.

There seems to have been remarkable progress made with the work on this locomotive.

We would love to see a breif or article on this work from somebody who has either been involved with the project or who would be willing to do some reporting work to talk with those who are. Off-hand, some of the major issues confronted are the continued use of the lap-seam boiler and the conservation of historic fabirc - it would be very interesting to hear how CHS appraised these and other issues in pursuing this project.

Should be some definitive reporting on it soon.

It came back to life briefly today.

About 4 PM, I ran her from the enginehouse to the fuel pump and back on her own steam. The chime whistle from a standard gage C&S locomotive sounds wonderful. She has plenty of power, and sounds square and strong.

Tomorrow we are scheduled to run out of the enginehouse for an event about 9:15 AM, then stand on display through the weekend.

I wouldn't count on seeing 9 heading up a passenger train anytime soon. There is still a lot to be done to make her a reliable engine.

Post subject:  629 and the meadowlark

Those who have Howard Fogg's "All Steamed Up" record album will recognize that whistle, recorded as the 629 was being brought north after a washout in Denver. For each blow for a crossing during the recording session, a meadowlark would answer. Because of this, the whistle was saved by someone at the Colorado RR Museum, and occasionally installed on the 346 when it was operating. The 629 was a B4R 2-8-0, and one of just a few B4Rs that were converted to burn oil, with a spare tender from a scrapped 4-6-2. It was the last steam locomotive in regular service into my former home of Greeley, Colorado, in March 1959, on the branch from Fort Collins.
