In its rather ungainly streamlined dress, as a backup locomotive for the Zephyrs, at Galesburg, Illinois, undated, but probably early 1940s. Long ago destreamlined, it was the subject of a complete cosmetic restoration at LaCrosse, Wisconsin not too long ago.

Well....personally I like ALICE unstreamlined, but if she was back in steam, I'd go for her either way!

Didn't two locomotives make it into streamlined dress?

BNSF is one of the few big railroads which doesn't run away from steam operation. If a CB&Q Hudson was to get refurbished, assuming a group had the capital to do it, I wonder if they'd operate it as a heritage locomotive?

I think it would depend almost entirely on who restored the Hudson, and who operated it. There are locomotives that aren't welcome on the BNSF and ones that are.

If you're asking if any streamlined steam locomotives are preserved, well...yes! Herewith:

1. N&W 4-8-4 #611

2. C&O 4-6-4 #490

3. CP 4-6-4's #2860 and at least one other

4. CP 4-4-4's #2928 and #2929

5. CN 4-8-4 #6400

6. SP 4-8-4's #4449 and #4460

Can't think of any others offhand.

If on the other hand, you're asking if there was another CB&Q streamlined 4-6-4 besides #4000, the answer to that is also yes; #4001.

And don't forget 3801 - picture a meter gage 611 down under - whose future is currently a bit cloudy.

That's what I mean't the "other" Alice. It seems that, aside from the number, you could tell which was which in that one had the straight angular streamstyling over the drivers, whereas the other had curved.

Hi-Plains:

The 4001 was quite a different animal than the other Burlington S-4's. She was built in the Q's West Burlington Shops using components supplied by Baldwin, whereas the other 4000's were rebuilds of some of the CB&Q's 3000 numbered Hudsons. She had a Worthington type S feedwater heater and a vestibule cab (like some of the O5 Northerns.) These two features were unique to an S-4 and became more visible after #4001 lost her shrouding. Another thing unique to 4001 is that she was the very last Hudson to be overhauled, travelling to Denver in early 1954. She was later shipped to Lincoln waiting for a call to return to action. It didn't come and she never turned a wheel in service after that Denver Shops overhaul!

Stored, awaiting sale for scrap, June 8, 1959, at Lincoln, Nebraska. Note the odd mix of wheels on 4001, which some other CB&Q Hudsons had also.

If I recall correctly, the 4001 got the rear (spoked) drivers from the 4004. Maybe someone can confirm that.

TRAINS magazine had a good article about #4000 and #4001 in about 1983, I think. I still have it somewhere...

Les,
Your memory is good. The rear spoked set was traded from the 4004 sometime between November 3, 1945 and April 8, 1946. Hol Wagner did a magnificent job of compiling the history of these great locomotives in the Burlington Route Historical Society Bulletin Number 33. I was lucky enough to secure a bound copy for my library. There may be a few of these left in the stock of the BRHS if anyone is interested. They can be contacted at: BRHS
