This shot of 4449 in its temporary BNSF scheme almost looks like a painting:

In the words of Eeyore, thanks for noticing....

Note, the shot is in fact in Washington state, at Woodland, and not CA.
That was a typo - waiting for the correction to "take."

If you want to take a look at a photo that really looks like a painting follow
this link - PM #1225 at speed pacing shot. It's very odd, both shots were Kodak print film scanned at 4000 dpi and reduced to 300 dpi. I have a few photos of the 1225 that look strangely like watercolors.

Rarely does a photographer take a "perfect" picture, but this particular shot is perfect in every way. You must have been thrilled to see the results when the image was processed! The locomotive is configured as "all business"; looks gritty, hard working, determined to make every appliance do it's job to the limit. The flow of smoke, steam, is rushing. Amazing. This may be the best steam image of all time, barring Link's last of steam series on the N&W. Congratulations for a job well done!

At the risk of being labeled a heretic, and with no disrespect to the fine folks who's hard work keeps 4449 a living, breathing work of art, I have to admit that I've never been that fond of the Daylight paint scheme. To my eyes, 4449 in black is a STUNNER! Absolutely beautiful.

Very nice work, Mr Goldman.

With apologies to Daylight fans everywhere,

Scott

There's something about that 4449 photo that I can't get away from. Somehow, it manages to gather everything into one frame - speed, power, design,....it just says it all, and with no words. Mr. Goldman may have taken, and we're fortunate to be seeing, one of THE definitive shots of steam at speed.

This may be the very type of positive Public Relations tool the BNSF would be hoping for when it comes to hosting these types of operations.

The photo alone is a prize for BNSF: the company logo displayed on a majestic, historic locomotive, running at speed on their mainline, hauling passengers (and in this case, their own employees!)

If I were in the PR firm at BNSF, I'd think this photo would say things manifold for the company:

-BNSF supports historic steam railroading
-BNSF appreciate our employees
-BNSF works together with historic preservation groups to combine past and present for the benefit of many
-The BNSF logo is on "the most beautiful train in the world."

Heck, I'm sure somebody at BNSF wouldn't mind having it hanging in their office.

Well done, Mr. Goldman. I think you have captured much more than a gorgeous image of steam railroading.

Very truly,
Kelly Lynch
