What is the status of the locomotives at teh K&K? Are they for sale, or just in storage?? |

I have no idea what the status of the equipment on the Knox&Kane is but I sure hope it's in better shape than what I witnessed at Gettysburg shortly after the 1293 disaster. I was hired to inspect all the rolling stock at Gettysburg by a prospective buyer of the RR and was shocked at the diplorable state of disrepair I found to be the rule not the exception. How they got away running with equipment like that for so long before the inevitable occurred will always be a mystery to me. If it's in the same condition as Gettysburg they might as well call the scrapper! Ross Rowland |

Does anyone have a list of what equipment they own? |

Just curious what the state of the two steam locomotives is? Is they are feasible to return to service or if they have a boatload of issues? |

Um, don't you mean #1278 Ross? While #1293 is currently being rebuilt/ refreshed to operating condition at Ohio Central, its the #1278 that "let go", and was later purchased by JJJ/ OC. Whether it will ever be restored remains to be seen, but its my understanding that its more than feasible, given time, money, and the usual things that go into restoring a steam locomotive. Well, that may be true, but another of those locomotives you inspected is under restoration right now, ex-Mississippian #76, at SRI in Owosso. How this all bears on knox & Kane, not exactly sure....? TJG |

You're correct,I did mean the 1278 not the 1293. The connection between the two properties is that Mr. Sloan Cornell(sp.?) was the head man at the Gettysburg then and was (is?) the CEO at the Knox&Kane. Ross Rowland |

If I recall, the K&K and the Gettysburg and before them, the PennView Mt RR, were all Sloan Cornell (sp) operations or at least started by him. The PVMt RR operated with the 76 which later went to Gettysburg to work with the former H&BT #38 (which came from the LA&L) then later operated on the K&K. I think thats how "all this relates"...lol |

I also inspected the Gettysburg stock during the "second reconstruction era' and found 76 to be in very restorable condition. I liked the Boonton cars, but was not overly impressed with the other passenger stock for sale at the time. I don't know what was holding the Stillwells together except for the paint! I did help BRSRR purchase a very high capacity B&M commuter car (the only useful interchangeable one) as a fast and cheap source of bulk seating. I anticipated their scrapping the carbody within the next couple years, but last I heard it was still in service. There was a NYC combine that should have been restored - not badly altered although highly depreciated. dave |

I have heard some very strong cases made for ex-H&BTM 38 to be preserved by the RR Museum of Pa.--it's a Pennsylvania short line loco, it was built by Baldwin, it's a non-PRR locomotive, it's so close to operable you could run her with a minimum of fix-up, etc. Unfortunately, due to certain restrictions upon the Penna. Historic & Museum Commission, even if the loco showed up outside the gate for free, it would be somewhat difficult to jam one more loco into the place. If the RR Museum of Pa. were legally capable of the "iron horse trading" now popular among a few Western museums, I could, for example, make a powerful case for similarly-sized PRR H6sb 2846 leaving the Museum in trade for 38, possibly to head to someplace like Altoona or some New Jersey state rail museum (hey, as long as I'm smoking this powerful stuff, I might as well fantasize). The fact that it's nothing more than a beautiful fantasy, however, is topic for another discussion another time. Hey, there's another idea: Let Strasburg add 38 to their roster, keeping her handy as a backup loco until someone in the PHMC has some sense. Then they can sell off that hard-on-the-track 0-6-0 they have........ okay, just dreaming.......... |

Sandy, Are you are drinking that "strange brew" again? You do make a good point about lack of space. One thing to think about is that railroad technology keeps marching on and then there will be more to add as the years roll by. Do we just stop now? Are there any museums with tons of extra track and display space just waiting to enshrine an F-40 or SD-50? |
