The photo of 578 taken in 1958 is more likely Bluefield, WV. 578 was regularly used on the Clinch Valley Run brom there to Norton at that time.

The 578 shot was definitely taken at Bluefield in 1958, it has been published several times. The shots with no background were retouched, most of them were shot in or around Roanoke, and documented new construction or overhauls. The shot of #6 was taken in 1955 just prior to it being placed on display. It is in front of the old paint shop at East End Shops in Roanoke, this is the same building where we prepared 1218 for display at VMT. #6 is in basically the same configuration at VMT today. #7 was "tarted up" for the 100th Anniversary of the Virginia and Tennessee RR, an N&W predecessor. It and #6 were the oldest locomotives on the roster at that time. Interestingly enough, when 475 wasn't being an "exhibition engine" in 1957 and 1958, it operated on the "Salem Shifter" local in it's "makeup". I have seen a shot of it switching the GE plant in Salem complete with diamond stack.
