Is anyone aware of the reason that the FRA does not allow for welding(building up) of steel locomotive tires?? Thanks in advance for the information.

All I have ever been told was the stress and imperfect welding that could occur. However, many flanges were welded and turned during WW2, and there is a ATSF Consolidation that had its tires welded to the centers as late as the early fifties, in ICC service.

The tires are high carbon steel. To properly weld they would have to be removed from the wheel, preheated, welded, annealed, and x-rayed. The result MIGHT be safe.
It would be much easier simply to apply new tires, and probably not much more expensive. Can someone post a vendor for tire blanks?

TVRM uses Standard Steel for tires. The name of the contact person there escapes me at the moment.

Edgewater used to make tires too.

You can't weld on axles or regular wheels either.
