This is based on news reports and videos from WSLS website in Roanoke. I'm familiar with the museum, but do not live in Roanoke.

First off, no injuries. The new roof was ripped off the museum, former N&W freight house. The Claytor Pavilion over the locomotives was not damaged, nor were 611, 1218, etc. Most of the roof landed in the parking lot in front of the building. The roof was recently installed at a cost of $250,000. There appeared to be water damage to some of the interior exhibits, based on video footage and comments from reporters and the museum director.

This is a serious setback they didn't need.

Ironically enough, I was there with my wife and children yesterday afternoon. No hint that the weather was going to turn dramatic, other than it was the hottest temps I've ever experienced in Roanoke. Great to see 611 and 1218 under cover, and the 611's cab is accessible to visitors.

As it turns out, I was wearing a shirt with the NCTM (North Carolina Transportation Museum) logo (I'm a member and volunteer there). One look at the shirt, and the staff let our family of four in for free. Not sure if that's the norm, but what a kind gesture. I hope to return the favor, in some fashion, some day.

I am planning on attending the builder's plate convention this year, one of the side trips is supposed to be a visit to the museum - I hope it's open. I've wanted to see the thoroughbreds for quite sometime.

I'm glad they've given them good stables to keep them in but thoroughbreds need to run.
