Well at least GTW 6325 is being taken care of, and last I checked CN 6213 was too, unfortunately 6167 and 6218 have both been sorely neglected since being retired, and now look shabby indeed.

IIRC, neither locomotive had severe damage or had worn out their usability when retired. 6167 require boiler maintainence and shopping, while 6218 was simply retired at the end of steam services, and the call up for repairs. Pictures of the 6218 don't show her as looking too badly on the outside. I haven't seen 6167 since display. Would some knowledgable person please shoot and post a short series of "as they are today" photos? Scuttlebutt said that interested parties were looking at ways to recover both locomotives for service in the future, but that might have been wishful thinking before possibility. 6200, at Ottawa's Museum of Technology, stands outdoors, stripped of anything removable and valuable, while her parts have been passed out to restore others during their service lives (6218/6167) or they are stored safely indoors on the Museum grounds.
Anyone planning a vacation in Canada this summer should work Ottawa into their plans. The locomotive exhibit hall is worth the trip alone (bring a flash and tripod). Sweet talk a docent and see the C-Liner and other steam locos stored inside the shop/shed. This is a great Museum. Lots more to do in Ottawa, btw.

Last I heard, 6325 isn't looking too well either. Two years sitting out in the elements has not been good to her.

Last time I was there (about 2 years ago) I had a good look about. 6213 is in much better shape, thanks to interested persons.



If you come on a Wednesday or Sunday in July/August, you'll see a 50 ton Shay in operation. August 12/13 is "Railfan" weekend, and the 50 ton steam auxiliary will be under steam - coal fired, steam. (The Shay is oil fired). There is also a 50ton GE diesel, etc.

There is also the Hull Chelsea Wakefield steam train, using swedish equipment, that runs from close to downtown Ottawa (within a mile or two of the Casino in Gatineau) and goes to Wakefield, QC. Nice trip.

I'm one of the licensed operators of the steam equipment, although I have not been out much recently for personal reasons. I'll be on the Shay once or twice more this summer, and am scheduled to run the crane with BRS member John Bryant (and others? got to check the schedule) on August 12th.

Any locomotive can stay usable with enough money. 6167 needed a lot of work when it was retired. It was pretty tired and worn out. It is in deplorable condtion now, however there are plans to restore it cosmetically.

I don't know about 6218 when it was retired, but it looks pretty rough now. It had a huge whole in the bottom of the smoke box when I last saw it.

Fortunatly, the 6167 doesn't appear to have been physically vandalized so much as neglected to the weather. She certainly doesn't look like she did when finishing service! Thanks for the update and reference to the restoration site. I wish them better luck than others in getting competent people into motion. A shelter, rust removal, steel replacement, and paint would make all the difference in the world as far as longevity is concerned. Saving 6167 today will help assure that at least one of her class could be fired once more in the future.
