The Huckleberry Railroad will be running D&RGW 453 for the weekend of August 12 and 13. This is one of the reasons for my post asking about temporary paint jobs. Thank you for all the suggestions, we will be using some of them. The other reason is that we will be returning our Ten-Wheeler to her original identity as U.S. 152. Of course, 453 will be 464 re-numbered, but the two locomotives were very close in appearence. The only K-27 with a doghouse in Rio Grande service was the 453, but we used one on 464 from 1989 -1993. We will be putting the doghouse back on for this special event. |

Are you saying she’ll be permanently re-painted as a US Army locomotive from her WP&Y service? If so, I’d love to see that, as so many former USA engines exist but no narrow gauge ones are currently running in Army paint!

She was not an Army engine. When built by Baldwin in 1920 she was lettered U.S. and used in the construction of the Alaska Railroad. She was rumored to have gone to Skagway during WWII, but I've never seen any documentation of that. We do have pictures of her in Alaska lettered U.S. In fact, I've never seen any pictures that show her lettered for the Alaska Railroad. This is not permanent, but it may last until we take her out of service for her 1472 day inspection. We have only 55 service days left. |
