Post subject:  Cosmetic restoration photos needed

I have recently been helping Jim Reisdorff of South Platte Press with a book by Lloyd Stagner on preserved Santa Fe steam. I have written a short chapter on what needs to be done to stabilize and restore these relics, with the hope that a few individuals will take up the cause of returning them to the appearance they should have. I was able to provide a photo of a driving box and grease cellar under an engine, but the chapter could use more, such as replacement of lagging with stryofoam or plastic pipe, boiler jacketing, etc. The photos could be of any similar locomotive, not necessarily Santa Fe. If anyone could provide some, or point to some on the internet, it would be appreciated. The photos we took of the 220 in Shelburne remained at the museum and are not convenient to me. The chapter is meant to be just a brief overview of cosmetic restoration, not a manual. We already have the link to Dave Conrad's booklet of the 1970s. If anyone could help, it would be appreciated.

Dear Bob: Please contact me off line. I have good coverage of restoring CB&Q 4978, NYC 999, EP&SW 1 and of course the "slice and dice" No. 8 at Steamtown. J.David

Hi Bob - I could swear you guys published an article about a Gainesville Midland cosmetic restoration within the past couple years. It wasn't real complete and technical and the photos were lousy but it did have some useful information in it.

I can send more if it will help.

It's not exactly news, but remember that ATSF 2913 at Ft. Madison ought to be a textbook case of how to apply Dupont Imron gloss black, because it just happens to be one actually DONE by Dupont, and the DuPont plant is at Ft. Madison. I was astounded at the condition of the paint after several years, leading me to believe that us folks really ought to pay more attention to preparation, or whatever they did, on a park locomotive because when DuPont did it, they really did it right. That loco is coming up on ten years, I think, and there's not a fleck of rust on it and no chalking either. For an unprotected, unroofed loco, it's in excellent condition. It's got a big brass plaque on it that it was painted by Dupont with Imron, so they are pretty proud of it themselves, and it shows.

It's hard to get really good shots if it between the shrubbery and the fencing, but I've got a few taken a couple years ago.

I did not realize that much work had been done to the 4023. When was the asbestos lagging removed? What did you replace its thickness with? Styrofoam? Was it removed from the backhead also? Did the movers cut the drawbar to separate the tender, or remove the pins?

Bob, "gunns," who is a member here, has posted a lot of photos of the restoration of ATSF 2926 going on in NM, over on Trainboard. He may have put links to them on here, as well. Of course, 2926 is being restored to run. I'm sure the cosmetic portions would be applicable to what you are looking for.
