As the 539 project is revived, here is the website for the previous restoration group, with lots of photos of moving it into the park in 1957, and moving it out years later. Novel use of a jack to move the engine a short distance, but no photos of polishing the journals. Don't know if they did that before rolling it or not.

Several weeks were spent polishing. They mains weren't too bad, but there was a nice stripe on between the grease blocks and the brass, where the axle was exposed to the air. When finished they made a nice curved mirror.

Both the leading and trailing wheelset were removed once the engine was trucked the few blocks from the park to the old paper mill before the journey on the main through Vancouver to Rye Junct. The axles were turned, wheels lightly profiled and the babbit hand scraped to fit.

A fairly sizeable crack on the trailing equilizing bar / frame was welded and several cracked frame bolts were replaced.

New grease blocks were fitted to the mains and new pads for the leading and trailing axles. The mains (as well as my hair) received a dose of STP as well since the grease wouldn't be up to temperature for a bit.

The only problem we had was one side of the trailing axel got a little warm the first move to Rye. It turned out to be a faulty pad that was unused, but quite old and just didn't want to soak oil. Once that was changed they all ran cold to BG.
