Hello all,

Does anybody here know the current disposition of CB&Q coach 7114, a heavyweight, six-axle car.

According to the roster of surviving equipment on the Burlington Route
Historical Society web site, this car was last reported at the Mid
Continent railroad musueum. I believe that this car was used in the
mid-1990's on off-line trips behind the 1385 - however I cannot
confirm this. Presently they have no information about this car on
their otherwise wonderful website.

Many thanks,
Tom Cornillie

I do not have the answer, but that list is worth a look, as it contains an amazing list of cars that were extant in recent years. Though the condition of many is debatable, there are enough cars around to make up several trains, from the narrow gauge C&S Leadville job through the Zephyrs.

Tom,

I have written to the BRHS a few times asking them to work on updating their list. They have a few CB&Q cars on there that haven't been at the Illinois Railway Museum for at least two decades (the 6100 series cars) and one that never made it to IRM (the 7301, which is at the Midland Railway Historical Association).

http://www.midland-ry.org/midland/CBQ-7310.html (typo in their web address says it is 7310)

I have had no reply from the BRHS.

Tom,

My father restored CB&Q coach 704 (now on the Ohio Central) for use with the 765 during the 1980s. During the time we amassed quite a lot of paperwork concerning "sister" varnish. I'll take a gander in the files.

After looking at the restoration page for this car, I'm wondering why they cut off the "old diaphragm" from the 7301? The page notes the car has been returned to service. Did they replace the metal plate/canvas diaphragm with tubular types, or are there no diaphragms at all? The restored photo shows no diaphragm structure on the visible end. Will replacememts be part of Phase II of the restoration? Do they allow passengers to move between cars on their runs? If so, how are they protecting passengers in the transition while Phase II is awaiting? Just wondering.

Dear Kelly and group,

I was looking over my notes last night and saw that the 7114 is indeed on the Ohio Central. My inital confusion came from the fact that the BRHS associates the 7114 with the Mid Continent. Was this the same car used behind Mid Continent's C&NW 1385 in the mid-1990's, or did they use a different car?

Many thanks,
Tom Cornillie

Yes I belive the coach in question was at Mid Continent until about 1993 or 1994. It was privetly owned and sold to the OC by the owner.

I have heard stories that it's roof was decorated along with another car earlier in life. Anyone out their that can confirm? (yes or no. the actual words are immaterial) I've heard the story in the rumor mill but is it a railroad story or a fariy tale?

Can you be more descriptive by what you mean by decorated. Was this something done by the CB&Q, or a later owner.

Also, I am interested in how these cars were equipped with HEP by the CB&Q, and when this was removed.

Below is a link to a photo of heavyweight suburban coach 7110 in the coach yard at Aurora, Illinois. (November, 1963) by Jerry Appleton. The cables above the end sills were for the HEP installed by the CB&Q with the introduction of their Budd gallery cars.
