| Post subject: | Window shade question |
SCRM is getting very close to finally getting our Southern diner #3157 back in service. Only a new set of batteries for the genny, servicing the AC and polishing the floor remain before the car can return to service. So far, we've replaced all of the leaf springs, rebuilt the D-22 brake valves three times (they failed the SCT the first two), replaced all of the windows in the dining area, and serviced the generator with an oil change and new filters (and I do NOT envy Kelvin and Marty doing THAT job!). It's also gotten a first coat of Pullman Green; the final coat of paint and the lettering will have to wait until it cools off in the fall -- it's just way too hot to paint right now. I doubt we'll have it in service next weekend, but it looks very, very good for a return on August 19. Anyway, one window shade is slightly damaged. The shade mechanism has two wire cords that I THINK are intended to add a little bit of friction so the shade stays where you put it (there's no release, you just grab the shade and pull to adjust it). The cords are like braided picture wire, but a little heavier gauge. At first glance it looks like these cords simply go from the top to the bottom in the channels the shade slides in, but closer investigation reveals that they actually pass through the aluminum molding that you grab to pull the shade up and down, crossing in the middle to form a sort of X. So the cord anchored at the upper left corner of the window goes through the bottom of the shade and is anchored at the other end at the lower right, with the other cord doing the opposite. The problem is that one of these cords has come out. It's been that way for a while, but since we've fixed so many other things in the car I'd like to fix this, too. There are a few kinks in the cord, but I think if I can get it rethreaded they'll work themselves out. Now my problem: I can't figure out how to get the damned thing apart! I can feel what I think are two screws on the back (outside) of the aluminum molding which I assume provide access for threading the wire through. I can't get to them because there's less than an inch between the shade and the window glass. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to remove the shade from its tracks to access the back side (didn't Southern ever CLEAN the back side of the window shades?). I'm reluctant to pull out the window trim if I can help it -- I'm afraid of damaging it and/or not being able to get it all back together right. Any ideas? |
